We finally finished building the chicken coop. Well almost, we’re just missing some minor finishing touches. Here is the original post about building a chicken coop. It took us around two months to finish it, between the planning and building. We used 2×4 and 1/2 inch plywood for most of it, and lots of exterior screws. For the roof we used regular shingles, and exterior decking stain and sealer to make water resistant. We are planning on adding wood siding over the plywood to further protect it from the rain. We decided not to have a chicken run because our chickens are free range.
Here are some pictures of how it looks and the process. The hens and rooster are all settled in. It took them a few days to get used to the new coop. For about five nights we had to put them in the coop as they were confused, their old coop was missing! The latest feature of the coop is the automatic door opener. We used the Chicken Guard premium automatic door controller. No more worrying about opening and closing the coop door. It was pricey but well worth it.
